Indicative Prices

How much will I have to pay for my MG?

This is a bit like 'how long is a piece of string' and, of course the answer is "it depends".

If you are wanting to get in at the low end cost-wise you can pick up an MGBGT for around NZ$6,000 to $8,000.  It may not be in great condition but it will be a start.

MG MidgetIf it's a roadster you are interested in then your best bet might be a midget to start with.  Midgets tend to be lower cost than MGB roadsters and will usually sell around NZ$8,000 to $10,000.

MGB roadsters vary considerably in price.  You can pay between NZ$9,000 and $16,000 depending on age and condition.  A fully restored model will fetch top prices.  Rubber bumper models generally less cost than the chrome bumper models

The New Fs can also get you in at the low end of the market.  Fs in reasonable condition can be purchased for as little as NZ$5,000.  It does pay to be very careful in selecting your 'F' - see our page 'Buying an MG'.  The F and TF models are comfortable and fun little cars.MGF

If something more classical is your thing the rule to follow is the older they are the more expensive they are!  Pre56 models such as the MGA, MGTF and the TD and TC cars are fairly readily available around NZ but, of course you are going to have to pay more for them.  An original-condition or fully restored machine of this vintage will set you back NZ$35,000 to $45,000MGTC

If you are wanting something older than these then you are talking real money and you are going to have to go offshore to find one.  Your best chance is to look in Britain, and even then the pickings are slim.  If you find something like a VA or an SA you are looking down the barrel of around NZ$150,000 for a good one.

MG Y Type

Saloons

There have been a number of MG Saloons built over the years.  Probably the most popular of these was the MG Magnette.  The early 50s featured some very elegant styling and these cars can still be found, although somewhat rare.  They can be found inMagnette unrestored state for as low as NZ$6,000 although a fully restored model is likely to set you back several times that.
